I want to know what everyone's opinion is on the 10 gems that should be in a respectable collection. We'll count proof or mint sets as one coin. I need some ideas!

That's like having 100 people agree on the same kinda pizza topping. Everyone has different tastes, likes and dislikes. Personally I'm a fan of mainly Foreign coins with an emphasis of WWII Commemoratives. Welcome to the Forum!

To me the coins that you should value the most should not be the most expensive or rare coins, values change over time, they should be the coins you rec'd from someone like your parents, grandparents or anyone who has or had a special place in your life. The coins may not be valuable but the memories they may bring may be priceless.
As far as the 10 most respectable coins, I think everyone will have a different opinion. Collect what you like and your collection will be respectable to you. This is the only opinion that really matters.

Yeah, you can't put a top 10 list because each person will have a different opinion. I can't even agree on a top 10 for myself.

Similar to the pizza topping analogy...it depends on if you're trying to complete one denomination's set with 10 coins or simply have 10 of the primary coins across all denominations.

Quoted for Great Truth. If you don't like what I collect, just wait a few months. I'll change my mind.

It is amazing how many ask questions similar to that where there are possibly as many answers as there are people. This is sort of like asking which car is best, what is the best food to eat, who should I marry, Which house should I buy, ?

I was wondering who I should marry........ Of course my girlfriend wants it to be her. We've been dating for about a year now and it just seems early for me, but she's ready she says. Does anyone think I should marry this girl ? (hee hee)

1909 VDB Lincoln Cent1913 T1 Buffalo nickel1917 Standing Liberty quarter188x-S PL or DMPL Morgan $1(1880's S minted $1s have some of the best strikes of the series with many PL and DMPL available) 1916 Mercury dime(full bands of course) MS64+ Walking Liberty half(with a nice strike, not mushy details) Oregon Trail or Texas commem half(two of the best classic commem designs IMO and affordable) 1798 Draped Bust large cent(only 18th century US issue that most can afford) Gold American Eagle(any size will do) a nice VF/EF Bust half with an overdate just for the fun of it I attempted to put together a list of coins that you don't need to be rich to acquire. No offense to philney, but most people don't spend that much money on a new car much less a 10 coin collection although it is a great key date set. I selected most of mine as first year of issue coins since those tend to be the closest rendition detail-wise to the original coin design and they tend to be plentiful. I also selected some for the sheer eye appeal and historical aspects. It would be easy to put together a set that I have listed for less than $1000. BTW, I only have half of my own list

TRICK QUESTION! This post serves 2 purposes, First to see if I can get the little ball to catch fire and to see what kind of collectors we have here. I fully believe that the collection that you create is yours and yours alone. My daughter has a big collection of US coinage, and she's 2. It's called her piggy bank! but it's hers and hers alone. I'll bet anyone who starts collecting changes tastes more than once. That's what keeps this hobby evolving. Right now I want to find some good error coins and venture into Merc dimes. Who's to say, I may get into barbers, Morgans or Peace dollars in a couple of years. Keep your picks coming!
