PL strikes are not unusual with S mint Trade dollars from that era.

Thanks @westernsky!

I just checked NGC pop report, there are only 25 PL coins in the series (all date + all mint), way less than Morgan :)

That is an incredible Trade dollar. Thanks for sharing.

I would say it was a heckuva strike on some early dies, and not a special strike or proof.

Thanks @westernsky and @TypeCoin971793!

NGC graded it UNC Details IMPROPERLY CLEANED, but not SURFACE HAIRLINES ,

From NGC website:
IMPROPERLY CLEANED is a generic term to describe unskilled cleaning when the exact nature of the action is uncertain.

Nice looking Trade dollar.

Thank you posting this.

My Trade dollar is very similar. An 1877 S with proof like fields and frosted
Liberty. When I posted it on CCF I got the impression some thought it
was polished. Hard to tell some people these are known to be this way.
Even though PCGS grading guide talks about it.

Nice coin , I'd say well made relatively new dies (don't see any clash marks or striations indicating repolishing)
San Francisco had a few really ace die prep and press workers around this time (re: many 1879-S, 1880-S Morgans, some gold, and a few Trade dollars amongst others) who never concerned themselves with high volume, low denomination coins. Some of their work looks really great, including your coin. Although the dies were made at Philadelphia the final work was done on-site. Those feathers on your coin look downright pluckable! Without seeing the piece in person, I can't opine about any possible cleaning but I don't have 100% faith in any grading company under any circumstances with good reason which I won't elaborate upon here. Enjoy your nice coin regardless!

"San Francisco ... who never concerned themselves with high volume, low denomination coins."

I know the reason now!

Thanks so much @freddo30!
