Realized late last night that I had misplaced my only Paraguayan coin. A 1998 500 Guaranies. Not of real value, I think, but losing a world currency that I worked hard to get was important. Didn't have time last night, had to think about the coin all day at work & where it could have gotten to. Took a while tonight and the coin was re-found, a crappy day at work ended up being a bad day with a very happy ending.

I know the feeling. I "lost" my 18/17-D Bullalo for about 6 months. Finally found it in the secret compartment of my briefcase.

The latest episode of "Hoarders" had a guy say something to the effect of, "When I am digging through my hoard I find stuff I forgot I bought. Everyday is Christmas!" .
Glad you found your misplaced coin. I still need to find that municipal trade token I put somewhere.

Well that reminds me of a hilarious situation...
When I was a kid of about 9 years or so my parents gave me a little gold coin on my birthday. It is a 1/20 oz Australian gold nugget which I of course still have. About 2 years ago I wanted to have a look at it again but couldn't find it in the place where I thought I left it. I was searching through our whole appartment and at some point I started accusing my girlfriend of accidentally hoovering it up or having it thrown away by accident.
After many hours and some serious disputes, I finally found it - hidden between 2 books (I sometimes feel nervous about someone breaking in and start hiding things but sometimes forget where I hid something). Well, at least the disputes were not too serious because the girl I accused back then is my fiancee now :D
Another coin I hid in an umbrella that was folded together I just found when I unfolded the umbrella on the stairway out of our house... That scared me because I thought about what happened when I had unfolded it somewhere outside and my 5 Gulden from Danzig would probably have gone lost...

I was talking to Ken Bresset, and he told me about a friend who misplaced his 1804 dollar. Turns out he had left it on top of his China cabinet for safekeeping.

Most of my collection has been given as gifts, I haven't had to invest much so far. I've gotten my things from vacations of my own or by asking friends and family for the bits of $ they've brought back from international vacations. My collection went from 10 different currencies to about 70 within a year, so I would have coins in ziploc bags & baby food jar lying throughout the house. I've spent the last couple of months working on a better system of storing my coins, so I hoping this doesn't happen again.

Ive been having a good laugh reading the ways people hide their treasures, and then forget where they hid them. The good news is so far they've all ended with the item being found, I hate those stories where the item was misplaced & never found, maybe it got hoovered or thrown out with the trash, for me the not knowing is hard, you keep hoping for days, months or years and meanwhile the thing is sitting in the landfill

Glad you got a happy ending.... A couple months ago, I went to add a small handful of silver War Nickels to my zip lock bag of about 280. Could NOT find the bag ANYWHERE ! --Frantic and highly stressed out ! So for about a week I completely reorganized our spare room (where my coin table is)....did our master bedroom....closets...under the bed...drawers, and the whole house looking for them. I became angry and upset at my wife for "reorganizing" my coin table a while back without consulting me, all but outright blaming her. Even became paranoid of my daughters friends going in there all the time.... I was EXTRA devestated because the first 100 War Nickels were my father's that he saved as a kid. I then thought that I must have sold them a while back when I had to sell off a bunch of coins to pay bills...so I apologized and resigned myself that I must have sold them and just blocked out the painful memory of it. Very depressed for quite awhile..... So...one day I'm at my coin table going through some boxes with coins, coin tubes, proof and mint sets, etc...I then found a coin tube marked "Silver War Nickels"...then another...then another...then another....etc., etc....lol...a total of 7 coin tubes found ! About 280 War Nickels ! The wife DIDN'T lose them...I DIDN'T sell them...quite happy..

I'm happy for you that you found your coin. I think it happens to many of us. I know that I'm currently looking for a coin I know I bought a couple years ago. It's the "Hanging Sock" in the Canadian Xmas quarter set. I got a few more of the set recently (even have one more coming in the mail)and want to put them together, but I don't remember where I put the first one. When I first started collecting, EVERYTHING I bought went right into the folder where it belonged. Then I started getting some 'regular' coins & commemorative in slabs/holders that won't go into the folders, so I stuck them in boxes, drawers, pill bottles, canisters,....almost anywhere. Over the last month or so I've been trying to put most of my 'misc.' coins into 2x2's and binders, but I have quite a way to go yet.

Interesting stories all ...
This must happen to a lot of us. I know it has happened several times to me.
But the one that stands out was my silver Alexander the Great (323 BC) coin. I looked for it for many weeks. Wanted to put it in the bank box. Looked all through one safe .. Then the next safe. I was told once if your looking for something, start looking right or left. Follow that wall through each room, check everything. That did not work. Checked car/truck garage. Gave up. Weeks later I went to find another coin, that was in a small box I put modern silver in, and there was my Alexander ....
There was no reason for it to be in that box ... But I was glad I found it.

I forgot to add that the quickest way to find a missing coin is to buy an identical one to replace the first one.

I paid over $100 for a coin two years ago. At the time it was the most I'd paid for a coin so I used to store it separate from my other coins in various places. Six months ago I could not find it and it is still "hidden" IN A SAFE PLACE! I have looked lots for it but have kind of given up and I think it will show up while I am looking for something else.
