Does anyone see any issues with this 1857 half and what would you grade it?

Nice olive color. Some nicks and bruises, but minor. Very attractive example of a fairly scarce coin.

Note the weakness of the strike on the obverse rim from S4-S7/S8 and reverse rim from bottom center of bow clockwise to UNIT. This is characteristic of Cohen 1 (the only die pair used in 1857) and a die diagnostic for all but the earliest strikes.

I would EAC grade your 1857 Half Cent as Cohen C1 (R2) XF40 net VF35 due to the nicks and spotty reverse toning. TPG grade AU50.

Extra Fine, details, cleaned.

The oils from your palm will quickly discolor copper.
Photos with the coin held on the edges is suggested.

I have it at XF40. The nicks are a little distracting. The original surfaces appear to be stripped off so it would warrant a details designation.

These aren't my pictures. I did notice the way the coin is being held and that was a concern.

I would grade it net VF-30. It has VF-35 sharpness but loses 5 points because of the minor dings.

EF-40. Even with the dings on this coin, they are to me, minor and the overall eye appear and details of the coin carry this coin to EF. Sometimes eye appeal can override minor detractors and I would pay EF money for this one give it is a tough date, low mintage.
