An 1880-S Morgan dollar in the old red Paramount holder from the Redfield hoard. I've always wanted one of these, and picked this one up today for about half or less of what they usually go for. I'll throw it here for thoughts on a grade. (The holders were blue MS60 or red MS65. I think this red one is probably closer to a low 64.) I love the toning -- it is almost a perfect match for my 1880/9-S DMPL, but obviously this Redfield isn't a DMPL coin. Very nice coin. Love the toning. The reverse almost looks PL in these pics.
I know there are several hoards out there is Redfield one of the more significant ones?
I have been thinking about picking up one of the Binion collection coins I have been seeing on the bay.

LaVere Redfield was a gentleman who lived near Reno, if I remember. After he passed away, they found hidden behind a wall in his house were 400,000+ Morgan & some Peace dollars, mostly uncirculated or slider AU. They used a counting machine to count many (thereby damaging that many) -- others got sold off by Paramount & other companies. This was in the era before modern TPG slabs. Lots of dates & MM was found at some point, pl/dmpl coins & CC's (1879 & 1893 among the lots), but most were San Fran coins. The coins themselves are just Morgan dollars but the numismatic history adds most of the value. Some of the coins ended up in PCGS and NGC slabs, usually cracked out from the Paramount holders. This was concurrent with the GSA releases from the government.

Very nice Redfield and i'd say it's real close to the MS-65 on the paramount holder. It looks very much like my 1899-O ANACS MS-65 Redfield.

I agree with MS64. Great example of numismatic history! Have you VAMmed it yet?

Not yet, Dave, I will when I get home. I did not see any glaringly obvious PUP's so I will start with the usual date/mm/etc.

MS-64. It probably says "MS-65" on the holder. That was on a lot of Redfield holders, and it was inaccurate even back in the day that it was done. Grading standards were loser back then for Morgan dollars.
