Okay, give me your opinions on this coin. Be brutal. There's no luster. Yes, I have no reason to believe it's not real. It's now mine. If you give it a net grade for some reason, give it one where the valuation would reflect fair market value. Edited by Prethen 02/15/2008 09:28 am

AU-53 - I almost said MS, but I'm now seeing wear on the left breast, arm, hand, and knee. Without luster, I can't go higher.

The lack of luster makes me wonder if it's been dipped. Not much wear - I'd agree with Vaslin's grade, maybe even 55 - but there's little detail loss and no problems in the fields, so it should still have luster. I see areas on the reverse which seem cloudy - could they be the reason for a dip?
The only detail that strikes me are the 4 cuts in the eagle's right wing. They seem a little far apart for bagmarks. Any ideas?

That's funny, I didn't notice those marks in the wing. They almost look like a reed hit.

Prethen you have been totally duped by this one...it looks like it is a fake 1878-S Trade dollar because it says 1876 on the front! But I'd say it's a 1876-S AU coin.

No CC mintmark for Prethen ? Still a nice coin. AU50-55.

Okay...I'm officially an idiot. I even noted 1878 for the file name on my system.

Wow...that's amazing. Not the coin, I'm talking about Prethen. Yeah...it looks nothing like a 3CN. Perhaps a bit larger.

AU55 with a wicked sharp strike, fully separated stars

I must admit that the strike really "struck" me. She's even a bit "pointy".

I'd also assume excessive dipping has knocked down the luster. Fortunately it seems free of excessive hairlines. I'll say AU-55 detail with a good strike and no major hits. Liberty's head and left breast have slight softness which is common. Hopefully you got a discounted price compared to the going rate for an unimpaired AU. This is the Type 1 obverse, with 3 fingers and a thumb visible on Liberty's right hand. Type 2 coins have 4 fingers. I don't know if the two types are valued any differently. The mintmark is very small. I'm pretty sure there were at least 2 styles used and most most San Francisco Trade dollars I've seen have a much larger mintmark. Maybe your coin is special in that regard.

Prethen, I can't see any sign of wear. Sadly I think someone dipped an uncirculated coin to brighten it up. What a crime! I would call it MS-62 Details - Cleaned.

how can you tell if it's fake...weigh it?

I don't have a scale, but I'm just doing an empirical weight check by feel. I've felt fake ones and enough real ones to know that this at least has the right heft. Is it off by a couple of grams? I don't know that for certain, but no one I showed this coin to even blinked at its authenticity.
I think it has UNC details like okie noted and should net down to AU. There are those that think that this should net down to an XF valuation which I think is overly harsh for this.
I took a look at another 76-S a couple of days ago that was a more original AU and my coin had a LOT more detail. I'm quite astonished at how hammered the detail on this coin is.
