Here are a couple questions I have: I get it about the difference in mechanical and actual doubling, but are the variation coins worth anything? I mean, is a variation nickel worth like 20 dollars to anyone but a coin searcher? Also, I have found two pennies that appear to be without copper cladding. I know chemicals can change the color, but these really appear to be forgotten, but I can't find anything referring to something like this.
I have many more questions but they can wait.

Other than that, here are a couple pics. I would love to hear any opinions and estimates of value these might have, especially the Merc on the wrong planchet. Cheers!

to CCF. The smaller dime looks like a Dryer Coin to me.Need close up pics of LIBERTY on the other dime to see if it's MD or a DDO. The cent is a "vise job" squeezed in a vice.

The pic of the 1918 dime is too small to determine if it is doubled. The 1941-D is a ' Dryer Coin'- it passed through a dryer, giving it that look and reducing the size a bit (worth melt, about $1). The cent is the victim of a 'vise job' or something similar- another coin was placed against it as pressure was put on it, causing the other coin's design to be transferred, backwards and incuse, and spreading the coin out a bit. This is worth face, maybe 1.5-2 cents if you want to save it for the copper.

EDIT: Darn, you beat me to it, John1.

Wow, that's disappointing. The vise job seems impossible though, because it goes under the raised lettering, I wish I had a better pic, but you guys probably know. I'll look up dryer dime. I know the other dime is Mechanical Doubling, I just had it there for size, but aren't they worth anything or is it too easy? I've looked at like 100,000 coins now and that's the best I thought I had...bummer...but that's why I joined the forum, I suppose.

The cent is a vise job and the clue to that is the extra devices are incuse. They would be raised if it had been struck.

The incuse extra devices only appear to go under the raised devices. I suppose that is because the actual devices are sturdier than the person using the vise.

Keep hunting. And, if you can, get a close-up of LIBERTY - take it out of the 2X2, please.

Well, that's a drag about the penny. But what is a dryer dime? I tried googling the term and checking the glossary on this page. I mean, it shrunk? What is that? The doubling on Liberty is worthless, guys, even if I could get a pic that close, that dime is there for size comparison only. (It only says it's doubled because at the time I didn't exactly know the difference.) But what is a dryer dime?

Sorry to disappoint you. It is a learning experience, though- now you know what to look out for. I agree with CotW, though, that the 1918 is pretty nice.

You'll get better results if you search for ' Dryer Coin' rather than 'dryer dime'. Try reading this thread.

I guess I should put my avatar as Galum, I can't give up on My Precious just yet. The dime is in good shape, the rim is perfect and yet it cuts through the middle of the words, and that is from wear in a dryer? I trust y'all, but I'm not throwing it in the pool just yet. And I know a little about engineering and hardness and printing, I'm going to do my own vise experiment next time I'm near my buddy's vice, I'll let you know how it goes! All I've had is bad news since I joined this group, Doesn't anyone have an opinion that makes me rich instead? Thanks for the link, it is very helpful.
