I bought a set of Mercury dimes for $260 minus the 16-d from ebay. Most of the coins are in VG to VF condition. If I had bought the coins one at a time the shipping charges would have cost me an extra 20% probably. Why in the world would people be selling almost complete sets of silver coins now? I am going to see if I can buy some other sets of Washington quarters, silver dimes, whatever else is going for decent money.

I understand. I always put my own sets together (even "junk" type silver sets) but I always seem to have more invested than I could but it foronce I get it finished.

The going rate for a worn circulation set is about $260 minus the 16D. Here is one about the same price as yours. How does your set compare?

I think my set is a little better. There were over 40 bids on my set. I was also looking at sets of Silver Washington quarters. One said "make an offer" and it was minus the 32-d, 32-s, 36-d and 37-s. The seller wanted $379. I said that was very high and offered $150. I pointed out to him/her the absurdity of offering a partial set minus key dates for top dollar. I like putting my own sets together too, but when I usually have to go online and pay shipping fees I always overpay for coins I cannot get at LCS or local coin shows. I think I would buy any set of silver coins that are in at least fine condition overall since there are usually only a few that are key dates like 1916-D Mercury dime or 32-D and 32-S Washington quarters. You look at silver Roosevelt dimes and there are no key dates except an error. Franklins there are only a couple of coins with mintage below 3 million that might be considered key unless all the coins are in MS condition. Buying a couple of key dates and then spending months finding all the more common coins is just grunt work IMO. This is not so true when dealing with small sets like Peace dollars or LSQ's. This is all just my opinion and may be due to laziness. It took me months to finish a LWH dollar set and there were maybe 7-8 coins that were really scarce. When I think of all the shipping fees I paid for more or less common coins just to fill my set and I know I am behind the eight ball and will never break even I think. I suppose I could just buy key dates but I like to complete mint and date sets.

We have a complete Mercury dime set sans the '16D and, we wouldn't sell ours for $260.00.
So, you got a good buy IMO

I see many Mercury dime sets and other sets for sale on ebay and even at LCS. There must be at least 65 coins in the set. There must be over 75 coins in the entire set, so if you multiply 75 X 4 you get about $300. I got those coins for less than $4 bucks a piece even though the 1916-D is not present. When is the last time you saw a Mercury dim with a good date in circulation? I wonder what a set of AU Peace dollars would fetch including the 1928, 21 and 27-S? If it is cheaper to get them by the set than individually and people are actually selling them as sets I will buy them. I that would include all the 20th century silver coins. To me this is like money in the bank. Imagine buying a complete set of Morgans. Even if the rare ones are just in good condition you might get a real bargain because these sets are being sold as parts of estates I guess.

I bought a complete morgan set recently missing about 5 keys for $3k from bad pictures which was about $38 per coin. It was a long forgotten set that was paid for with only 5 coins from it. So yeah, everyone here knows I prefer to buy complete or near complete sets and sometimes they can REALLY pay off

You know until a guy at the LCS offered me a set of Mercury dimes I had never really thought of buying by the set, but why not let someone else find all the common coins for you and we just hunt up the few key dates? If I could buy pretty good quality sets of popular coins I think that might be better than hoarding gold. Plus, I just like looking at the coins that someone else collected for me.
