Coop, you taught me a long time ago about checking for elongated dots in EPU and I have found 100's of DDR's by checking for that first. Thanks, as always, for all of your help.

Glad you brought this up cause I always had a question on this-I too always look at the dots first but am I right in having always thought that it could be a DDR and also NOT have elongated dots? Is that correct?

That is true. It may affect other areas of the die. But most often the EPU is the first sign. That 1956 Proof DDR is crazy. I would love to see more images of that one.

Thanks Coop, This is a very weak area for me and this post is awesome as usual. Still trying to understand the meaning of spreads on the devices and this helps.

The spread is the differences between the hubbing making the devices wider or slight larger than normal. The die is showing two different hubbings/two different hubs. The enlargement of the devices is called spread. Note the spread is enlarged more on the first devices, then reduced a bit on later examples? Again note the fist example is stronger (1972P-1DO-001) Second one not as strong. (1972P-1DO-002) The third is weaker. (1972P-1DO-003) What makes them stronger and weaker? The spread of the hubbingSpread can be a separation of the devices, or just an enlargement of devices. Depending on how the doubled die happened. Class 6 doubled dies are different because the spread is uneven across the devices. Note the 944 is different from each of these doubled dies. Three are class 6, the first one is just a normal coin. The spread is different so you can tell they are from different dies. Hope this helps.

A lot easier when you know what to look for. Certain areas are usually affected. When you find you have a normal coin in those areas, it is a lot easier to move on to the next coin.
