Sever die polishing removed part of the fields making the devices thinner/shorter.

Also known as a worn die or Die Deterioration.

It sure looks weird. Die Deterioration is what a poor man's doubled die is, it is not a doubled die at all.

Worn die, but no "die polishing" (intentional die abrasion). This form of Die Deterioration involves a retreat of the field down to the deepest levels of the design. That's why the letters grow thin. I call it "design-devouring die wear". I've written two Coin World articles that pertain to it.
Error coin writer and researcher.
