An-1881-Gold-Dollar-For-You-To-Grade An-1881-Gold-Dollar-For-You-To-Grade

Here is an 1881 gold dollar. The gold dollars of the 1880s were the last of their kind, and the mintages were low. This piece has a mintage of 7,620 pieces. The low mintages resulted in many Proof-like strikes. Sometimes it's hard to tell the Uncirculated coins from the Proofs. This one is a business strike.

Probably has a little pool of luster under this dollar that dripped from the coin.

I agree with 66, and it's close to PL.

I agree it looks MS66 easily. Actually it is hard to see any flaws in the images.

since I am consistently over grading your coins, I'm going with MS65 even though it looks 66.

I think this is a proof, not PL. Whether Proof or Mint State, it's 66 all day long and every Sunday too.

Last of its kind? I thought they stopped minting this variety in 1889 not 1881.

Anyhow, very nice coin. I'll say MS-66.

Incredible luster and sharpness. Hard to see how it can be less than MS-66.

I fixed that. I met to say the gold dollars of the 1880s were the last of their kind.
