Over the years I've tried to pick up BU rolls of 1964 Kennedys if the price was right. I know MS 66 are pretty rare and 67's are worth a ton. It's probably unlikely I have either but I do have some OBWs so there's a chance. Kennedys seem tough to grade so I was wondering if anyone could send me a guide. I don't have any coin memberships so I can't send in to PCGS or NGC (I wouldn't bother sending to anacs).. But if I have any high grade ones I'd like to get them in airtites. Thanks!

I am in the same boat as LibertyEagle. The problem I have with Photograde is that it does not address WHY the coin shown merits the grade it received vs some other grade. If I don't know the "why," then how can I make an accurate grade - especially between something like MS66 vs MS67?

From photo grade, the ms68 actually looks worse to me than the 66. The 68 looks to have bag marks around the word "half" on the reverse. The 68 is toned though so did they give it a high grade because of that? Kennedys sure are tough to grade IMO. I could also see there being a lot more 67,68 out there but given a 64 is a common coin most people probably don't send them in for grading.

My pint exactly with photograde. They should have non-toned examples accompanied by why each specific grade is assigned. Granted, it will differ from coin to coin, but explanations are the best teaching tool with visual aids.

One the best sources I use for grading coins is a book by David Bowers, "Grading Coins by Photographs" . The book goes into each U.S coin with a picture and grade that explains why the difference in grading.
This is a great book to have when you are looking at PCGS photograde . You can compare what you have.
Granted , grading is subjective.
