Looks like it was a nice AU coin, though.

Quote: Yeah, AU30 No no no, you dont understand... It WAS a low AU coin, as you can see hints of luster, but the cleaning drug it down a ton of grades in order to get a straight grade. Right? Or was it the cleaning that gave it luster? Looks to be an XF-low AU coin but cleaned, right?

Wow, NGC was comfortable net grading this sucker from AU to VF. I would rather it say AU details than graded so low in a problem free status.

Yikes! I have a lot of Bust Half Dollars and understand that a lot of them are cleaned but that is an ugly coin. I paid far less for this one.

Quote: It WAS a low AU coin OK, yeah, you're right. I see what you both are saying, AU net graded to VF problem free. Don't like that grading method at all. Agree, should be AU details. Thought I looked at the coin, but apparently not close enough. Might be worth a crackout and resubmission to PCGS. Is AU details more valuable than VF problem free? Would be more honest anyway.

I get that most older coins were cleaned at some point in their lives, but WOW - market grading poster child.

I'm not so sure it's been cleaned, harshly or otherwise. It is a bit ugly, at least to my eye, but I don't (can't from these images) see any scratches lining up in the usual hairline cleaning pattern. Doesn't look dipped, plenty of luster. If I'm wrong, and of course I might be, please educate me. I'd love to know what I'm missing.

Just my opinion, but how can a VF30 coin over 200 years old not be colored in some way? That coin doesn't have any tarnish or toning whatsoever, except the tiny remaining spot on the reverse. So either it's cleaned (dipped imo,) or it's undergraded by at least 20 points.

Market graded to 30. TPG's are very easy on Bust coinage in general when it comes to cleaning. If it had original toning I'd put it around 45.

That dark mark on the eagles eye I believe was intentionally left there. Come on guys I'm with Ed on this one . this coin was cleaned or dipped , lets just say it shouldn't look this color. and as for NGC ,They really messed up on this one.

It should have graded as Improperly Cleaned and/or Altered Surfaces. It was likely dipped (or otherwise chemically altered) to strip it's patina to zero. Detail is far better than VF30 as noted.

I don't think I have come across another thread on this forum where I agree with what everyone has said.

IMO:
1.The coin is not AU! It is an XF.
2.The gray coin that cost much less is border line ugly. Sorry about that. If given the choice I'll bet any informed collector would prefer the NGC graded coin if both were raw.
3.I agree that net grading sucks BUT that is the only explanation for this under graded slab.
4. The NGC coin is bright that is the ONLY evidence that suggests cleaning.
5. There are no "hints" of luster. This coin has LOTS of it.
6. Perhaps something we cannot see is on the reverse that MIGHT bail NGC out of this mistake. That coin will be cracked out, toned and end up in a 45-53 slab somewhere depending on its "new" eye appeal.
Just MHO...LOL.
