Was going through my grandfather's coin collection trying to get things sorted for family. I don't usually work with gold, so I'm not too familiar with how it grades. The $5 gold looks real nice and I see the prices really increase for MS64 and higher. What would you grade this coin as? Hopefully the pictures are clear enough to see the details.

Very clean cheek; solid 64, shot at 65.

Well struck with good eye appeal, it appears the luster might hold it to MS63. If the luster is bold and full it should go MS64 though. Very nice coin.

Going by the photos, it looks like an MS-65 to me or maybe even MS-66. It is definitely a coin that needs to be certified before it is sold.

Minimum MS-64, but initial gut feeling was MS-65.

Really clean fields, no visible wear on high points, looks very choice. The grade will depend on luster which probably has not been accurately captured in these photos. Assuming original luster is fully present I'm on board with an MS-64 or 65 grade. I'd send it to PCGS if it were mine.

There is a chance of an "altered surface" decision on a coin like this. TPGs will sometimes detect evidence of smoothing or other alteration on what look like pristine gold pieces. However, this one looks like an excellent candidate for a righteous high MS grade. Good luck!

thanks for the input. I'm hoping it's a 64 or higher. I sent it off today to PCGS. hopefully I'll have it back in a month and I'll try and remember to share what it came back as.

Should easily make 64; I'm betting 65.

Very clean fields I say ms65 it's just a nice coin, but as other mentioned luster could hold it to 64. Still I'd love a coin like this in my collection.
