Your coin appears to have been cleaned in these images. The black areas very close to the devices combined with the bright, white areas everywhere else confirms a cleaning. It does not appear to be abrasively cleaned in the images. On this date in this condition the cleaning does not have a huge effect on value however.

Thanks...BH1964 and edweather..... What grade would you put on this coin I could only guess a range of AU50-MS60, but I am a newbie so...? It is the only coin I have that has eye appeal, but 3.5M were minted and I am sorry it has been cleaned...

Unfortunately, it can't be graded. You can't say that this coin is a MS60. Then say that this coin has been cleaned to an MS60. Once a surface has been artificially altered, you can call it an MS70 and it won't matter. The coin can no longer be conditionally valued. The value is only intrinsic or based on extreme rarity such as a cleaned 1893s Morgan.
Don't understand how a dealer could think that it was not cleaned. Did he really think that only the edge had been handled by someone with dirty fingers?

denco7, Thanks for your feedback! I am still trying to learn the basics, the guy who saw the coin worked in a local jewelry shop that also deals coins and precious metals. Along with this coin collection, that was passed on to me by my late Father, I had a few 'large' currency notes. Folks on this site encouraged me to get one of them looked at, it has now been sent in for Grading. At the time I was in the shop, having him look at the currency bills, I showed a few of my coins to the dealer. That's when he made that comment....
Since I am now retired I am getting interested in learning more about coin and currency, and have the time. Right now, all I know for sure is that I do not know! And I am old enough to ask for and to respect feedback from those who do know. Problem is telling the knows from the think they know, if you know what I mean...?
Thanks for your comments....

Photos can be so deceiving, with flashback often leaving a coin's surface looking unnaturally bright. Cleaned or not, it grades EF-45 to me, possibly AU-50 at best.

It was dipped at one point but not mechanically/abrasively cleaned.

Looks at least dipped to me. I would give it an AU50 details.

While I agree something looks improperly done with the coin, I wouldn't get too down on yourself. First, there is definitely more than just silver value there. It is still over a century old coin that probably has a few interesting stories it could tell.
At the end of the day, if it is a coin you enjoy having, it's worth having. Ultimately, spotting cleaning is more for determining financial value and what you'd be willing to pay for something. I will say that there is more financial value than just silver there. That said, there is admittedly probably not a lot, but I don't think it is a melt candidate, either.
