I'm almost embarrassed to show these coins! My mom probably found them metal detecting. I have no clue as to what caused them. Any ideas? The nickel is hollowed out somehow.

Thanks for looking!
Carol

I would say they are Dryer Coins. They got tumbled.

The quarter looks spooned or mechanically reduced to me.

The nickel is strange as it is seen in the pic. Weight may be needed as it looks like two round objects (one being a nickel) stuck together. Thanks, Doug.

Edit - Could be wrong, but I've yet to see a peace sign issued from the mint.

Thank you so much for your input! I weighed the nickel and it is 2.5 grams. Its interesting how the quarter and nickel are almost the same diameter.

I believe the nickel is 1964 or earlier. Normal weight should be 5.0 grams. I thought it would weight more than that instead of less. Something really fishy going on there. Thanks, Doug.

The quarter is a Dryer Coin. The nickel is a trick/magic coin, you can see a hole in the 'O' at the bottom of the coin. The other side should be convex (your looks like it was abused and permanently pushed in). You hold the coin under water and squeeze it one or two times to push air out (through the 'O') and it will fill up with water. Then when you 'click' the reverse you can squirt water onto someone when they look at the coin. My brother had one when I was younger, probably still has it somewhere.

Looks like someone was in the process of making coin rings and gave up.

Jake's right that the quarter is a Dryer Coin, and I'll take your word about the nickel. Interesting pair!

I tried to put water in the nickel so I could squirt my husband;) Jake is right, air escaped through the tiny "o" hole, but the back is too far pushed in and didn't absorb the water. They are online and cheap if you want one!
