1/2 ounce of pure gold vs a $30 delta badge. I guess it really depends on the pockets of a buyer/collector and whether or not they want something rare and exclusive vs something mass produced and cheap with lots of wear on it in their collection.

In contrast, the gold Star Trek coin was created for the 50th anniversary, whereas this delta badge was not. While the coin does not explicitly say "50th anniversary", the 50th anniversary logo appears on the box! For this reason, I could see a Star Trek collector wanting the gold Star Trek coin over the delta badge and they wouldn't necessarily have to be a coin collector to want it either.

If the Mint had a booth at the Star Trek convention in Las Vegas this August and had lets say 5 gold Star Trek coins for sale at issue, do you really think they would go unsold? I highly doubt it, not when people are willing to pay thousands of dollars just to get a ticket into this year's convention. Some Trekkies even went to the 2015 convention just to pre-order a ticket in advance for the convention this year simply because it is the 50th anniversary of Star Trek.

One clarification for the specs comparison a page or 2 back. 2013 superman had a mintage of 1500.

I'm very excited to get this coin. Have the mint pic on my phone wallpaper! Will be a nice addition to my collection.

All this time I thought the 2013 superman was at 1500... Thanks for the link, 2000 it is.

I am a star trek fan, don't have any memorabilia though. This coin will be part of my coin collection.

Might spend some time beside superman or possibly shaped maple leaf, will have to see.

Wildflower and CC-Ottawa brought valid points in the conversation.

I am "play" both sides, when advise to buy for re-sellers, and "it will go for melt years after", cause the life is full of examples.

And I will agree with MoneyPenney:

As for the people at the convention, are they willing to pay $2000-$3000 for a coin when they can get something similar to this that you can get for $30? Remember, not all Star Trek fans are coin collectors.

The basic rule tells that non-coin collectors do not care about the coins. The "Trekker" with CAD 1300 spare would buy many items and not the single coin.

Did you people, receive the mail from NZ Mint about "Yo-Gi-Oh" (trading cards) 1oz silver coin? Stupid stuff, right? Now, is the Star Trek theme on the coins really different from the Yo-Gi-Oh or Pokemons on the coins?
No difference. Same commercial and money grab stuff.

...but ofcause I understand that we all want variety and something new together with traditional items.

@CC Ottawa

Thank you for pointing this out. LOL....I feel like this is my really "DUHHHH" moment. LOL

@silveroid

I did get the email about Yu-Gi-Oh yet how can you compare 15 years of this to 50 years of Star Trek?

Generations have and are still following Star Trek.
