Surprising a majority of the votes are for foreign coins, if anyone whom also enjoys foreign coins you can leave a post specifying which Countrie's coins appeal to you. Personally I enjoy collecting German coins, mostly world war two era.

I chose halves but it was a coin flip with copper 1/2 cents and 1 cents. I was also surprised at the good showing for foreign coins. Is there a fair number of international members of the forum or are they simply that popular?

Nickels...primarily Liberty Head (still searching for that 1913...) but I very much enjoy Jefferson and Shield nickels. I have a sizeably Buffalo collection as well, but they are at the bottom of my Nickel List. I like them, but they don't "do it for me" in the same way the the other three types do. --gary

I chose foreign coins. And to specify an area I would have to say New Zealand. I also love the design on the old Swiss coins

The best coins for you to collect are the ones you want to collect. Not what anyone else says. Additionally, collecting coins is different from investing in coins. You can collect anything you want regardless of value. This also differs from hoarding. For example, if you keep bags of wheat cents, that is more like hoarding. If you collect the best coin for each date and mint within a certain series or date range, and then study them, then you are a collector. That is my opinion. Pick something that appeals to you and fits your budget.

I am a Morgan dollar addict, and to me everything else seems almost worthless. I'm sure you'll come to a similar opinion about your favorite coin as well.

I see no mention of the Gold coin US series, or any gold coins in general. I think this accounts for a reasonable sized portion of the collector market, or at least enough to make it noteworth....imho. Of course, if the choice were presented to me, i'd go for pre-1933 US gold.

The available float in circulated Morgans seems to retain somewhat of its value. The price for them fluctuates with the price of silver but their exists a floor that the price seems reluctant to drop below. If you are hedging with an investment in Morgans, it will give you some time to liquidate and take profits. At least I hope so! nlp

I actually have some collections of 2 centers and 3 CN (about 20 each). However, I choose foreign. I've always been a collector that is in it for the knowledge. The history that an old foreign coin has is unbeatable. Besides, I hate to let out the secret, but foreign coins are a lot cheaper than American ones. I can get foreign coins with mintages below 1,000 for only a few bucks. Likewise, a few bucks will buy a coin from the 1500s or 1600s. One time I bought a VF+ 1906 Liberian 50c piece with 1/3 oz of silver and a mintage of only 24,000 for 20c. Not my greatest buy ever, but definitely a memorable one. I have had many deals over the years, especially on ebay (but that market is drying up). I challenge collectors of US coins to beat a deal like that (alright, some will I'm sure, like the roll hunters and their circulation finds who will say it cost them 1c for their treasure, but not too many). As for which foreign, the answer is all (almost). Depends on what I can find a deal on today.

My favorites, and I have many, are U.S. coins. Specifically, I love the coinage of the 20th century; Lincoln cents, Jeffersons, Mercury dimes, Roosevelts, Standing Liberty quarters, Washington quarters, Walking Liberty and Franklin half dollars and Peace dollars. I collect more series and classic coins; present day coins too. But I identify with my favorites; I hope I age as gracefully and earn as much respect with my fellow collectors as they have..... afernbaugh
