The 1854-D Three Dollar Gold Piece was a dream coin for me for many years. On my first trip to Dahlonega I went out of my way to see the example that was in the Mint Museum collection. With a low mintage of 1,120, the coin is scarce, but it's not as rare as might seem. "Coin Facts" estimates that there are 300 survivors, and that appears to be about right. Still the grading service population reports might lead some people to think that it is more common that it is. The reason that a large number of these coins have been cracked out and re-submitted for higher grades, especially from AU to Mint State. So what would you grade this one? Bill Jones, fantastic coins you have posted here at CCF. My question, when you present these coins should we rookie graders (speaking for myself) consider the current grade? Which you refer to as the "GradeInflation" (I may be wrong on the term) or the year you bought the coin? Hope this makes cents or is it sense?

I have zip experience here, but I'll take a stab at AU-55.

Dahlonega gold always is tough like Charlotte gold. I'm gonna say au58.

Beautiful and awesome coin, as are so many from the billjones collection! The weak denticles are normal, maybe even universal for this issue. This example otherwise has a good strike and original surfaces as far as I can see. Friction is obvious in the fields, with most luster confined to the sheltered areas near the rims. Looks like the high points of the hair and wreath have light wear. I'd guess this piece is a solid AU-53, with multiple thumbs-up!

PCGS graded this coin AU-55, and it has a green CAC sticker.
