In a previous post one of the members asked us to grade a 1794 large that had a pretty nice obverse but a weak and incomplete reverse. I commented that the reverse was fairly normal for these pieces because of the lack of a protective rim and the shallow lettering. Here is a high 1794 large cent. The variety is S-21, and this piece has been in some famous collections. Take a shot at grading it and also check out the reverse. You will see why these coins often have imcomplete lettering on the reverse. By the way, this coin looks kind of "regal" to me for an humble cent that didn't even have legal tender status when it was minted! Edited by billjones 03/19/2016 10:40 am

Wow - nice! ..... Being a relative novice at attempting a grade for this beauty I will still make an attempt: a couple of very minor issues on the obverse - the hairline above the obverse crack and a small mark also on the obverse below the chin and near the rim. I like the reverse as unblemished and original. I hope this 1794 rates an MS grade maybe 63? All this IMO as a novice. Sure would like to hear how it stands up to the experts.

I'm thinking mid-AU range; it seems to have some wear on Liberty's cap and in the obverse center. Your point about weak reverses is well-taken. I'm still looking for a pleasing Liberty Cap cent for my collection and examples with strong reverse details are few and far between. This one is a beauty and I'd guess it would be priced north of $10,000. No wonder I don't have one yet!

Wow. At least AU-58, could well be MS - I'm hardly an expert in this area.

AU-58 minimum. Probably a TPG MS-62. I see what you mean about the reverse.

AU-58 at minimum. I don't come across much MS old copper so my grading skills are obviously lacking.

Quote:AU-58 minimum. Probably a TPG MS-62. I see what you mean about the reverse. You are right on the money, TypeCoin971793! PCGS graded this coin MS-62, brown. My grade is AU-58. Just to show you how nutty EAC grading can be, a well known expert graded this EF-45. I'll buy every EF-45 like this he can supply to me if he is really selling them for EF-45 money. That would be what the business people call "a cash cow" for my hobby budget. A couple of the "big names" that have been associated with this piece are Byron Reed and Dan Holmes.
