I have heard that you can get some nice big silver coins at very good prices if you root through old mint sets and commemorative Olympic sets. Not only can you get attractive silver coins but at a good price near melt. Is this true?

I am not really sure what your asking ..

But for mint sets. The more common years, for silver
are 1957 through 1964. The biggest silver coin will be
the half dollar. If you are at the right place at
the right time and have a good relationship with
a dealer, it is possible to get these near melt.

For dollar size silver, there are 40% Ike's from
Brown box and Blue packs.

and commemorative Olympic sets.

I am thinking you mean any commemorative dollars, like these.

Some of the very common commemoratives might be bought near
melt. More often they go for Greysheet prices, same for mint
and proof sets.

From 1983 to 1997 inclusive (excepting 1985), the US Mint issued what was called a "Prestige Set." It was a proof set of the year's circulating coins that also featured a proof version of a commemorative silver dollar that was issued that year; it came in a specially-designed book-like holder.

For example, the 1983 and 1984 Prestige Sets included a proof version of the Los Angeles Olympics commemorative silver dollar (1983-dated or 1984-dated, respectively) in addition to proof examples of the standard circulating coins.

These sets can sometimes be purchased for very reasonable prices, especially those featuring the more common commemorative dollars (e.g., 1986 Statue of Liberty dollar). Finding any of the sets at melt value would be more an exception rather than the rule, however.

I started buying Prestige sets, to harvest the proof
commemorative dollars ..

Problem was I started liking them so much I did not
want to break them up.

I have three of the Prestige sets. I really like them and they will remain intact. One of my long-term goals is to get the rest of them.

I have 3 of these as well. It is my Goal to get them all but it has been slow going. They had them a few years back at coin show 45 miles away. I would buy one each year(once a year show). Last two years no one has them.

They would have them in a box in the back of their booth and if you asked to see them they would huff and puff like you were putting them out wanting to buy them!!
