I love these things. I picked up one that I have not seen for sale in quite a while looking.....TT1.9.

Are there a lot of these out there? The only time I see test strikes for US coins is in articles about lawsuits or high priced offers in Coin World.

Some are common like the 2004 and 1999P coins which got wide RCM distribution. The earlier ones were issued to test in vending machines etc when they were looking at new shapes and metals. They are around in varying numbers. I have never seen mintage estimates. I think many were returned to the mint after testing.

Very cool. Hey, I live part time on Michigan's Keweenaw peninsula, which is practically Ontario: do you think they'd ever circulate down here?

By circulate, do you mean will you find them at your LCS? or find them in pocket change? These were never freely circulated and only released to specific groups of people. To find one in the wild would be like winning the lottery.
But you never know, I find proof coins all the time while CRHing so its not inconceivable to be found in the wild.

I guess I meant, would they make it down here through casual coin collecting circulation. Canadian cents are becoming more and more rare in rolls in the US as people realize they're no longer being minted. Although if you took a survey of people on the street and asked if they knew of any change to Canada's one cent coin (still called pennies by most) since 2012, I'd bet one or two in a hundred would have any clue.

There was a strong on this site a few months ago where someone did find a scarce loonie test token in the wild.

These are odd ball items with few buyers and few available. So values are hard to judge. Nevertheless I do wonder about Charlton values. I have bought and sold several of the same 25 cent test tokens with very high catalogue values, which makes me think they aren't all that scarce. At the same time this one carries a $175 to $225 catalogue value and this is the first I have seen in over 5 years of looking. On these items I don't rely much on catalogue values.
