Who says the buyer overpaid? Welcome to the true monster morgan market. That puppy has full obverse coverage with neon pop color and most is the highly prized green. Saying that the buyer overpaid is like saying that the registry set guys overpay. Sure to some, er most, it looks like overpaying but in reality it's what they bring in todays market period. Markets do ebb and flow so in 10 yrs will the values hold? That's the question and the gamble moster morgan collectors and registry guys make

I see an $80 coin that is worth some premium for the color. Maybe $200, lol.

My thoughts ... There are many levels of collectors. Some have the funds/income to pay more for coins than others. I like the monster toned Morgan's very much. When I can pick up toned Morgan's in my price range I grab them. In the future I think you will see high end collections that have some amazing monster toned Morgan dollars. I fall into the middle class group of collectors. And might think it a little crazy for some high end collectors to pay over a million dollars for .. 1796 quarter .. or a 1913 nickel. If I had the right amount of money .. I might not think that is so crazy. And I am sure I would enjoy owning some of those coins. One of the hard things to learn about this hobby, is that there are so many different levels. With no right or wrong. Cons - There are many people that over pay for coins. I am not sure this one is a example of that .. We can only hope that buyer did the homework and knows what these toned dollars trade for.

Clearly it was worth the premium to the buyer.
Many collectors who have the funds to purchase whatever piece appeals to them the most will pay very strong premiums for coins that appeal to them. Sales like this reflect that.

What's that saying ....." One mans junk is another mans Gem " . That is a gorgeous coin that one man thought was a Gem. Nothing surprises me anymore . Look at the Vancouver Canada real estate market where a home that should be bulldozed sells regularly half a million dollars over ask.

I understand condition rarity, but this is an MS-64 coin. Its got attractive toning, but when did that start to completely trump condition? Does grading not mean anything anymore? I've bought lots of coins with amazing toning and the major determination of price has always been grade, not color.

Andrew. Maybe this site will help. Grade means nothing really when it comes to monster toned morgans, it's all about the color, coverage, pattern, pop and progression over whatever numerical grade assigned to it... http://www.jhonecash.com/coins/tonedmorgans.asp

And that one for just under $2k, while nice, it isn't in the same league as the $6k coin.

That site is owned by a dealer that sells these coins. His examples of auction prices from Heritage includes coins graded MS-66 to MS-68. I think if you walked that coin around a show you'd probably get offers of $200 - $500.

This monster toned MS64 coin sold in auction in 2012 for $2640 at Great Collections. The coin is more valuable than $500, it appears that the buyer may have overpaid at $6,000.

Well, it didn't have a CAC sticker in 2012. Just sayin....

The current photos of the slab do not show a CAC sticker. I see in seller comments that the coin was imaged before sending to CAC.

Toned coins its a very complex thing , I browsed this site that cascade mentioned and it's really helpful I see toned coins as art , some people can admire a paint and think it's priceless and others just think it's a ordinary piece
