I had never really put any real thought into coins or even realized that they were that cool but now that I've been into it for a couple weeks I have what I like to call my penny problem. I cannot seem to get rid of any of them that I have which I have thousand probably because I don't know how to tell if they're worth anything or not and because I have so much fun looking at them for hours.

,New comer to CCF. Yes most U.S. collectors started with pennies, ( AKA )Lincoln Cents . and from there it usually blossoms into one heck of a coin collection .

The more you look, the more you realize each penny is unique and has a story. The most interesting ones may not be valuable, but there's much joy in taking the journey and learning more about them. Welcome to our world.

You will have to figure out what your focus is. Here's what a I happen to do: I don't hunt rolls or look for errors. I get my coins from change or purchase them. I save all wheaties. I save all Lincolns 1982 or before that are copper. I save anything 1983-up that is really really nice. Typically these don't make it into change. I buy uncirculated Lincolns to work on my sets. I have a few different ones going at the moment. Have fun! That's the main thing. There is no specific way to collect.

Invest in a CherryPickers Guide. I purchased one a few months ago and I wished I'd gotten one years ago.

OH MY! and just wait till you start digging through boxes of 2500 pennies and making little stacks of each mint mark and year to look at individually for any of the 1000's of mouth watering varieties. Definitely read a book on Lincoln cents so as to Get an idea for what to look for. Lincoln cents are one of the most well written about series in u.s. coins save for maybe Morgan dollars. but with almost no metal value attributed to cents, its amazing that they are so popular! I love 'em.

Lincoln Cents is where I started also. I had no clue how many different varieties there were. I'm a stamp collector turned coin junkie. I'm hooked. Stamp collecting is a lot lighter. LOL I go pick up one of my coin albums and about pull my shoulder out of socket.
