At a coin show today I purchased a 2016W Mercury dime. It is Gold, encased in a sort of capsule or something like that. This then is in a heavy hard case, then padded in cloth, then in a cardboard box and then in one more box. And it is a Full Banded one too. The dealer said the Mint only made about a few hundred thousand of them. This dealer said he had 20 of them and with the one I purchased, he now only had one left. He said he was told the Standing Liberty quarter and the Walking Liberty half will be next in a Gold Anniversary coin. I would like to break it out and put in one of my Albums but no slot for them. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

I'm not sure I would set it free unless you send it in to get graded. Just my thoughts. You bought it so, do what you want with it. I'm sure what ever you decide to do with it will make you happy. Great coin to have. Good luck and enjoy it.

Us mint made 125,000 of those. Don't break it out of its original government packaging. If you do send it into PCGS or NGC send it in as you have it encased, they will get it out without you risking damaging the coin. They are very popular right now with about a 100% markup on ebay around $300 per or more. They sold out in like 30 minutes. My sisters godmother managed to snag 2 online for her and her husband

125,000 is a massive mintage for a commemorative coin. If you don't have one yet, be patient. The price will come down.

"Full bands"? I have heard so much negativity about them all having "flat bands". Do you have any images available of yours?

Yup...125k is a lot
Price continuing to drop. Yesterday lowest price sales were $264, $267, $269. Profit on those after fees was around $30
Grading...NGC requires a minimum of 5 coins. Not sure about PCGS
Full bands...it is a known issue that the coins do NOT have FB

This is another example of the mint providing a coin to the flippers to let them make money at the expense of collectors who couldn't get to a computer during the time these things were sold. I didn't want one, but I still think that the distribution system is unfair. We pay taxes, and the government should make the distribution of its products fairer. Those who work should get an equal opportunity to buy these coins at the issue price.

Just an FYI: The US Mint does not use any tax revenue to fund their operations.
I agree that the "big boys" always have the upper hand with these products but ANY system that would change this would also be circumvented to benefit the volume buyers.

Nice to see these prices come down to list. I am seeing $269 or best offer.

Was there any doubt these would be big loosers after the initial frenzy? 125k is too much, period!

Far from big losers. Very far. There are a high percentage of 70s that bring strong profit and many of the raw ones are likely rejects from the 69/lower group being sold at a modest profit. Like it or not it's capitalism. And sometimes I don't like it either.

Capitolism is great! And good on them for making a huge mintage and selling them all so quickly but the aftermarket will not bear 125k period. These will sink like rocks to bullion prices quickly. Even 70s as the percentage will be so high. Unless of coarse production was so crappy that 70s will be a rarity. That's the only hope in these, to get a 70 back and pray they are rare

We will see Cascade. If you can ever buy one anywhere near bullion price then let me know so I can buy a bunch. Also let me know when the 2009 UHR with 100,000 minted gets near bullion price because I'd like several of those too.
