Hello all, I picked this up in a part of a collection that I purchased over the weekend at an estate sale. I have my own concerns over it, however its weight is good and shoots as 90% silver with my XRF machine. Thanks to everyone in advance.

The date does not look right as the three appears not raised above the other numbers and the overall position of the date appears to be off slightly. The mint mark does look strange. Check the LIBERTY die markers for the rabbit ears in the left leg of the R and slant line in the upper part of the T. Here is a photo of the die markers.

This is about the best I can get on that area.

My opinion is that the coin is counterfeit as the date position is slightly off, strange mint mark and no die markers. On the 93 S there was only one die used on the obverse and two dies used for the reverse.

Slider - what bothers you about the date position?

Might as well send it off to ANACS for a quick and dirty TPG opinion. At least you'll know for sure whether it "is" or "isn't". Worst case "counterfeit" OR "altered"; best case "genuine damaged w/VG details" Good luck!

The date looks pretty good. The 3 is raised and has a long center, which is expected and the 1 is centered on top of the denticle which is expected. The other numbers also seem correctly placed. The "rabbit ears" diagnostic is not present but that might have worn off. The mint mark placement seems correct.
Nothing about the overall look of the coin screams "counterfeit" - has a fairly genuine color and wear pattern. It this is an alteration of some sort it is a very good one.

I agree the the date looks right. It is the correct denticle count from the point of the bust. The '3' may not appear raised because of the hit at the bottom of the 9, which reduces the height difference between the bottom of the 9 and the bottom of the 3. The only thing that bothered me was the absence of the rabbit ears and the scratch in the T. Since those areas are incuse, in a fairly protected area, I would have expected them there, even with a lot more wear on the coin, but I would defer to someone with a lot more experience than myself.

Quote: what bothers you about the date position? Here is what bothered my about the date position to call it slightly off. On the op coin the point on the neck is aimed at the center of the fifth dencitle to start the count of four on the genuine coin the point of the neck is aimed at the start of the forth dencitle. Could this change difference of happened because of a hit on the OP coin? OP Coin: Genuine Date:

Slider. I disagree I see the same position on both the above coins. The op coin has just taken hits that have smoothed down from circulation which has slighly augmented the neck point and 1 crossbar

DO ANACS. If it is real you got a nice coin, granted damaged coin.

Cascade,
You may be correct, but the OP coin has an excuse for everything that is off. Hit on neck. Hit on the bottom of 9 to make the 3 appear raised, hit on the mint mark S, to hide any alterations. I agree send in the coin in for grading.

Mint mark looks funky. Date looks okay.

Surprised no one mentioned the two large pits on the reverse between the left star and ONE.
My opinion -- and it's only that -- is that the coin is genuine.

Put the coin in acetone. If the mintmark is glued on, it will come right off.

Thanks for the thoughts on this one. It will be submitted to a third party grading service and I will update this thread once I know for sure.
Also it has already had an acetone bath.
