This 1870 Shield nickel is in fine shape, with nice golden toning. A very pretty coin -- from a series that doesn't get much love.

There are some interesting features of this coin that I will point out later on; see if you can pick up on any of them while you grade it.

PCGS holder. What would your grade be?

As always, thanks for looking & commenting. AB

Don't know about the grade but I see some of the letters on the obverse are cut off at the top. Is it just the picture?

Good observation. It's not the picture.

That's a honey of a shield. I think it's somewhere in the PR64 league, but it wouldn't surprise me if it's a grade higher.

That chunkss out of the two a "S" and "D" are really strange. Looks like Struck Through Grease or something, but not on the high end coin. Damage? Could this be the reason the coin was saved from circulation?

don't know on the grade

broken "S" are always cool
you see lots of examples on other 19th century coinage as well

I'd love to think its an MS64PL

i can see some areas of die flash in the lower part of the motif on the obverse and maybe a slight clash on the upper part as well

Can I guess both MS64PL and PR63?

I'm thinking PR63 with a shot at CAM. Nice looking piece.

My grade would be PR-64. It's a nice coin that might look nicer in person with the golden toning.

Are those die scratches on the Obverse in the field in the lower left quadrant of the cross on top of the shield?

could be but quite possibly a die clash, not sure though. Wish I had it in-hand to inspect.
