Hello, I recently took this and a couple other Buffalo nickels to a flea market coin trader because I had heard about the 3 legged buffalo (which this is not) but the man seemed interested in this one asking how much I paid for it (I think it was a 5 for 1.00 deal years ago at another flea market) where I store it etc..Is there anything special about this? I looker online and read about "tall dates" but don't see any comparisons to the non-small date..to me just seems like any Buffalo nickel. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

I see nothing unusual about it other than it WAS in almost uncirculated condition until those horrific corrosion spots around the date killed it.

Might try some acetone on it.

Is there something strange with the last rear leg closest to the edge of the coin?

The date sizes look normal: Here is a business strike and a proof nickel side by side: Dates look the same for this year.

Coop your photo/photoshop skills are amazing. .if the business strike and proof strikes are so similar, how would you tell the difference? Thank you

Proof coins have a mirror like finish in the fields, there is no mistaking them. also only the San Fran mint makes proofs, so the mintmark would be the S under the buffalo, yours has no mint mark denoting the Philly mint.

Quote: Proof coins have a mirror like finish in the fields, there is no mistaking them. Hold on there, not true for the 36 proofs. When proof production started up again in 1936 most of the coins were satin finish proofs and they don't have mirror fields. The brilliant proofs started back up again in 37 and they come both ways.
