I have a quarter that has a missing groove in the edge of the coin it isn't like it was filed because it is extra material between two ridges. Is this common?

If you look closely it has 2 faint lines where it should dip down and a bit of metal filling in the space

First of all,to ccf

We need to see pictures of the coin to determine if it is an error or post strike damage. Once you provide us with a picture we will be able to help you.

Looks like a contact mark on that reed. Coins get dropped and get altered.

Could the collar have a die chip filling the slot? Thanks, Doug.

I don't think it is a hit or PMD.

The recesses in the reeded edge of a coin are created by raised ridges in the collar. If the collar chips and the ridge breaks away you can get a missing recess like that. I think it is a chipped collar.
