Hi, since I'm new in this, I have been looking at many pictures but still dont understand when peoples are talking about spreads.
Does this mean that your cent is not any good if you do not have any doubling?

No doubling but a nice spread? Spreads or doubling, now I'm all confuse.

Where could I see spreads?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Al

"Spread" is the term that relates to how much doubling you have. A close spread is more minor than a wide spread. For instance...

a very wide spread:

another very wide spread:

A wide spread:

http://www.coppercoins.com/lincoln/...ie_state=mds

A close spread:

A very close spread:

Another term I use instead of spread is "Separation." The spread or separation between hubbings/Re-punching Mint marks. (RPM)

The wider the separation of the punchings of RPMs, the easier it is to identify the die number.
When separations look close to different dies, then location of the RPM is used to identify the die number.

So I use the term separation instead of spread for doubled dies. Maybe just my choice of words.

Coop - Separation only happens when the spread is wide enough to create a gap between the devices....that's separation. Your terminology needs a little polishing there.

Chuck: Always nice to correct thinking. Otherwise you go on thinking incorrectly. Thanks.

Upon re=reading my own post, I need to correct myself.

Separation is the division between the sets of devices...i.e., separation lines.

Spread is answering the question "how wide is the separation?"
