Got a pretty good deal on this one. Coin is nice and original. Both sides are the same golden color, I used a handheld light, which washed out the OBV a little bit. Have not taken it out of the 2x2 yet, I will if these pics aren't good enough. Opinions welcome! Would like your own assessment, as well as how you think a TPG would grade it if different. Assuming good luster, I agree it makes 65. Very nice.

Seems to be some friction on the high points, I'd be at AU-58 on this one. Great type coin.

UPDATE: Grade is in. I was expecting 63 with a real shot at 64. I think I may resubmit at some point down the road. Kind of a pain to have to do that, but there's just no way this doesn't deserve a higher grade. - - - -

A nice LDS 1859 IHC with clash and interesting coloration, luster present, but the marks at neck, cheek, (possibly) date, "U" of UNITED, and above ER in AMERICA suggest to me that MS62 is an accurate grade for this coin. CCF keeps auto-correcting "U" to "you"

It appears IndianGoldEagle hit it on the head. 62 sounds like a market-grade for a beautiful 58 IMO.

Quote: It appears IndianGoldEagle hit it on the head. 62 sounds like a market-grade for a beautiful 58 IMO. What happened to MS65? I do disagree with friction/wear on the coin, though. I've looked at plenty of 1859 IHCs to compare, and on over half of them, you will find more flatness on the high points and they grade MS63 - MS64. Could be weak strike, but hard to believe that is always the case. In hand, there is no friction or change in color on the high points. Any marks are not noticeable save maybe the one by the date. An MS62 is getting into the unpleasing uncirculated range with significant and distracting marks under no magnification. Not the case here.

That is a beauty, it deserves better than a 62

I was thinking MS-63 when I looked at the photos, but I'm not surprised at the MS-62 grade. For those who were saying MS-65, look at the toning and the minor spots. The coin has departed from its original white color to quite a degree. Here is my piece that is graded MS-64.

Bill thats an awesome coin, Mike, I thought that would grade higher. You could sell it for 63 or 64 money to someone who could crack
