I have a 1937-D 3 legged Buffalo nickel that I need help authenticating from an estate sale and best TPG to send if it looks real. Here it is. Also, what grade would you give it? Edited by Jsalsa123 06/17/2016 08:49 am

Appears to be real.
Cannot tell if it has been cleaned or not. My gut is telling me it has been!
For a quick, cheap authentication and grading send it to ANACS.
Good luck!

and I am a novice on Buffalo nickels but it looks like a great find! Check the TPGs websites and see if you have a coin shop near you that could do the submission for you or check for coin shows in your area. Typically in mid to larger size shows you can find a table from one of them. Keep up posted!

Awesome, I am a novice to Nickels too, mostly collect gold coins. I do however know about the 37-d 3 Legged nickel and some of the diagnostics like the peeing buffalo marks so I offered $50 and got it. Excited to hear it looks real to you guys as well! Being that I am not too good with Nickels, what are the best ways to tell if it has been cleaned, dipped, altered, etc? I will be sending this off to get graded and keep you posted.

If this Buff is genuine which I think it is , It should grade at least MS-65 . Get conformations from the experts . If it's a go ,then send it in to PCGS or NGC . You might have hit a Biggie !

It looks great if it is real and if it has not been harshly cleaned. I can't tell. I have one graded and slabbed in EF condition and yours is better than mine by far from what I see. However, for $50 it may be fake. It is worth much more just via Red Book. It is too good to be true is my thinking, but I hope I am wrong. That coin if it is in EF condition would sell for almost $1000 retail. If MS 65it sells for about $35,000 and you got it for $50. This is red flag to me. That coin is in mint condition. You can take it to local coin shop just to get it appraised, but don't sell it to them under any circumstance or any price. Just be sure it is real and has not been modified to remove the fourth leg or something is my advice.

It looks genuine to me. It also looks like an original high AU/Low MS coin. Fantastic deal! I wish I would find something like this. Would surely help pay for college...

If you do let anyone look at it do not let the coin out of your sight even for a second. It could be worth a small fortune as others have said. People can palm a coin in a second and substitute a fake or claim you just lost it. Get it graded and take every precaution to insure and protect it. I would send it Registered Mail which is only secure mail system at USPS. The USPS Registered mail maybe expensive but they will insure anything at it real value. I know firms used to send gold bars via the USPS when I worked there and heaven help the person who sighed for it and lost it. They would call in postal inspectors and any evidence of tampering and you get a jail cell.

Quote: It also looks like an original high AU/Low MS coin. possibly cleaned. I also believe, do to moth eaten like back leg and that the 'P' and the 'U' in E Pluribus Unum is not touching the bison's back, that it is genuine! Amazing find! Good luck! And to CCF!

Whew, nice find. I too am in the UNC details with a probability of a cleaning. I'm envious!

Almost too good to be true. Absolutely genuine. Doesn't look cleaned to me. I'd send it to PCGS.

I truly can't get over the fact that someone bought a (what I think) genuine 3 legged Buffalo nickel that grades AU-MS for $50! I would be happy to keep it at my house for you

I am not sure if their father had just been given a few coins and didn't pass any knowledge down to the kids but they seemed pretty clueless and uninterested in coins. I went looking for some gold but there was not much more in way of the good stuff. This is the only thing I found of value. I am truly excited from the feed back, can not wait to get it graded. I hope it is a big win!

And as already stated, do not let that out of your sight. Look up the PCGS web site for how to send it to them for authenticating. Do not trust a dealer to do that for you. IF real your messing with a multi thousand dollar coin.Go to the PCGS web site and find out how to send it in yourself.
