@queenjewels, first welcome to CCF. Second , my initial thought is that this coin has just seen some hard living and has been damaged after it left the mint. I'm going to recommend to the mods that they move your post over to modern US coins so that the folks there can provide a more informed opinion though.

PSD (Post Strike Damage), also called PMD (Post Minting Damage).

Think about the minting process - two largely flat surfaces (the dies) press on a small metal disk with tons of force. This cannot raise metal above the flat parts of the dies like the damage near the date has.

But after strike, when there aren't the dies being pushed flat, it's easy to raise metal.

to CCF... I moved your post to where more eyes can see it, and help explain what you are seeing.

to CCF. You have an example of a coin that took a beating from someone or something after it left the mint. It is what we call post strike damage.

It is a damaged coin. It wasn't struck looking like that. Value? If you bought a new car and hit a fender of the car with a sledgehammer, making a nice dent in the new car. Would that increase or decrease the value of you new car? Damage will always remove a premium for a damaged coin. So it is just worth face value.
