I got a B&L illuminator box and a light ring off ebay for use with my Stereozoom4 microscope. Just for the heck of it, I tried taking a couple of pics using my <$400 setup. Used an old LWC and a new LMC...interesting how different the results are. Lens was a SK Componon-S 80mm at F/11.

On both, it seems like the tungsten setting on my Canon 1000d seems to come the closest to the color. The light temp is about 3200k, slight yellowish tint at 50% brightness from the light box. The newer coins seem to throw a much redder hue. Neither of these were processed in post with the exception of the RAW being brightened and the sharpness tweaked a bit. Then resized to fit here.

I think I'll stick with my Jansjos...seem to give me the best results with color and luster. Thoughts or advice?

Looks good Andy. Try blocking-off portions of the ringlight with couple layers of masking tape. Start with from 4-8 oclock, and a little strip from 11-1 oclock.

So, I was finally able to get a light ring and attach to the Rodagon 80mm lens via some adapter rings. Light is a cheapo $16 setup like this:

I blocked the lighting as suggested by Ray. Pic is the results of a processed RAW. I don't like the dark areas of the coin. Would like to see cartwheels effect here as well. However, if no LED's were blocked, the overall coin appearance is pretty much washed out. May have to experiment with blocking different areas or maybe just diffusing vs. blocking.

Camera WB was set to Daylight, lights at about 50% intensity, with distance from coin at 5-1/2".

Believe it or not, this cent came right out of a Mint cello pack...not sure why so grody.

Comments/thoughts/suggestions are welcome.

edit: added this pic using the Jansjos at 9/12/3 at lens height.

I get quite a few out of the mint cello packs that appear dirty, dusty. I do nothing to them except lightly blow them off and handle gently with cotton gloves while photographing and then placing in a holder. I do not use stock pictures because I want people to see the actual coin they are receiving. Wish I could photograph on a black background but I have to have a pure white background for Amazon.
