He would have enough money to get himself some ice cream on a hot day.

I think it would be a better idea to just give one to a kid. Perhaps if you saw one walk in a coin shop. The other day I heard a little kid talking to a store clerk in Macy's about coins his grandpa gave him. I wish I had a couple of Buffalo nickels to give to him. They are what sparked interest in me.

I miss being a cashier sometimes. I used to swap bills for my half dollar rejects from roll hunting, and I loved seeing kid's faces light up when they saw huge silver coins go into their parents' hands. I really hope I planted the seed for at least a few of them.

When my daughter (years ago) mentioned they were studying Canada in their 5th grade geography class, I sent in a roll of Canadian nickels for the teacher to give each child one of their own. They really enjoyed (being kids) seeing the beaver on the REV.
You might even want to contact a local school and make an inquiry with a history teacher. When you give the history teacher the information, you might end up getting the teacher interested also. If the coins come through the class rather than being found in sand (cool idea though and I like it!), the kids are more likely to see it as something special enough to show Mom and Dad... ie. less chance of being spent on bubblegum.

If done around where I live, all found coins would be used to buy stuff. Age groups of kids that hang around play grounds is a bit older than most people think.

Guy at a coin show saw my little boy looking at the coins and asked if he likes coins. He drove home and got his penny collection he started as a kid and gave it to him. My boy was asking to fill the few holes that were open in the folder.

The other point not mentioned Kid picks up coin brings it home, it brings back memory to parent of when their grandparent or friends parent showed them one when they were kids or it could start a conversation with grandpa who happens to have an old collection in the attic that he forgot about and now he has a grandkid to share the collection with... Sort of like an episode of that short lived Jack Bauer (actor who played Jack) show "touched" ... It could spark both new and old collectors back to the hobby... Maybe instead of mercs just drop a roll of dateless Buffalo nickels or cull Indian Head cents around a school yard or playground.
