I have a few "extra" Mercury dimes. I was toying with the idea of leaving them in the playground in our neighborhood to be "discovered" by children. The coins would be in 2x2's, with a short, simple description. Thought it might spark an intrest... I was also thinking of putting the address to this site on the 2x2, but wanted to make sure that's ok... Mod's?

May I ask in which park you are planning on burying them so I will have a head start on all the kids? Great idea though Hope the parents won't take the coin away from them though.

It sounds like your heart is in the right place but be careful about skulking around a playground hiding things.
Even if you're not really "skulking" or "hiding things", in today's world, some folks are bound to get suspicious. Just my opinion there but I do like the idea of discovery and young people getting interested in the hobby!

Only problem is a 5 year old finds the Mercury dime, spends it on a couple pieces of bubble gum, you no longer have a Mercury dime and neither does the kid. Next you have to spend the next 10 years coin roll hunting trying to find it again. LOL Does sound like a great idea if it were fool proof and knew it would spark an interest in getting kids interested. I tried the same thing with my son when he was younger and I used to collect Hot Wheels, all he wanted to do regardless of value or rarity was tear them open and play with them. I still have my collection, several worth $10-$100 each and a few worth a few hundred each. I would still be collecting them, but ran out of room to store them all. LOL

I don't think its wise to covertly seed "prizes" in a kid's playground with your address on them, good chance you would have the police knocking first.

I believe the OP suggested giving the address of this website (if mods approved), not his personal address.

I'm on the fence with leaving Mercs. in a playground . The younger kids won't know what to do with them, so they will give them to their parents who probably don't collect coins. thus CCF site won't mean anything to the kids or their parents . The idea might only work with older kids ,11-15 . Just My Honest Opinion .

Great idea! Where do you live? No, just kidding lol. Seems like a good idea, but the coins might get damaged. Being a kid, I know that we play roughly. The kids might step on the coins. Also, honestly, kids lose things very easily these days. Even if the parents let them keep it, a kid without strong interest will just set it on their desk and eventually lose it...

1. Find out where metal detectorists hunt 2. Buy some cheap Roman coins and arrow heads on ebay3. Bury them 4. Check the news for proof that the Romans discovered America.

I think the majority of the coins found will be saved. Definitely not spent. For every 45 mercs you throw toward the cause, I think you could get one hooked-for-life collector.

You guys all have very good points... I would hate to think of a kid just tossing the coins. I don't see our community being a place where something like this would raise suspicions, but I guess you never really know for sure...
I was thinking of adding the web address for CCF, I wouldn't dream of leaving my home address...
Perhaps I need a more "targeted" approach, maybe friend's kids who show an interest or something. It would be nice to know the results of my efforts...
