If this is the wrong place for this, please move it and accept my apology. Found this among in my grandfather's Buffalo nickels. It's not very well done, and I wonder why someone would even bother.

Somebody's very disturbed, member of the American Bund, or even a primitive challenge coin.

I wonder if it originated in the 1930s

That was my real curiosity DL30K. Did someone do this to the coin when it was fairly new or was it only years later?

It actually might be worth something to a Nazi memorabilia collector .

Hitler rose to immense power starting in 1933-1945. This could've been a nazi supporter or just someone who is really messed up. This looks like it was done a while ago.

Why would anyone do that? Isn't it illegal in US?

Wow. That's different. In the US there were many Hitler sympathizers until we entered the war. This is so unique and unusual I bet it would go for good money to the right collector on the bay.

All I know for sure is that is was done prior to 1975, since that is when my pap went to heaven, and my gram was never into coins. She added some wheat pennies, a few Susan B. Anthony dollars, and a pair of Sacagawea dollars. The only other times that safe got opened was when she would give away a coin for a milestone birthday to someone in the family, and that only happened maybe a half-dozen times over the years.

So, John, what else was among the coin collection in the safe? It sounds like there was more than just the Buffalo nickels and the few gram added. Was your Grandfather a WWII vet? Mine was and he left a little cigar box with various old European coins (nothing of any value) and a few German medals.

Nope. That would violate our 1st amendment (freedom of speech, press, religion, etc.)

Yes it is illegal.

?Whoever mutilates, cuts, defaces, disfigures, or perforates, or
unites or cements together, or does any other thing to any bank bill,
draft, note, or other evidence of debt issued by any national banking
association, or Federal Reserve bank, or the Federal Reserve System,
with intent to render such bank bill, draft, note, or other evidence
of debt unfit to be reissued, shall be fined under this title or
imprisoned not more than six months, or both.?

Has anyone ever been charged or convicted of this I don't know

That applies to notes, not coins.

The only thing that applies to coins are changes meant to defraud. This and most counterstamps do not qualify.

Jbuck is correct. Also why fantasy dates are kosher and why Dan Carr can safely create his gorgeous overstrikes without fear of government reprisal.
