I suspect the coloring of a normal dime was caused by exposure to the environment.

I agree. Note the silver on the torch on the reverse where the red color has peeled off? Just an outdoor find.

It could be struck on an improperly annealed planchet, but since any mint luster that might have been present is gone, there's no easy way to tell. Could just as easily be environmental discoloration.
