Im just wondering what ppl think of ebay sales such as this --> http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI...320221400246 2005 "5 Kangaroo" $1 coin Rare MULE coin !aUNCIRCULATED
You are bidding on a 2005 "5 Kangaroos" $1 coin MULE aUNC Condition!
This coin have been used in circulation for a short time.( Because I am a beginner on grading coins so please grade them yourself by scan)
**** Very Rare****
This mule coin is originally for 2006 $1 coin but the mint had found that they have used a 2005 reserve.
So this coin's mintage is the LOWEST EVER!
Extremely difficult to find this condition, MULE design now and this is great coin to collect for collectors!! [...] Don't miss out!
**I am not a coin Pro and I've got this Mule information from 2008 Greg Mcdonald guide Page 151**
COME ON!! There are over 6 MILLION OF THEM!! How can this guy say "*** VERY RARE ***" and "Lowest Minatge Ever", when the mintage is about the same as the International Year of Volunteers issue? Just today I have got 3x 2005 'MULES' in change from different places! Dodgy!

Then it wouldn't be UNC would it.

Hahaha, I actually messaged this guy about it, providing links to the RAM Yearly reports showing 6 Million produced. The reply was a courteous 'well, thats only YOUR opinion'... Not sure how a RAM Annual Report (which is a legal document BTW) is my opinion, but yeah... Idiots!

By the way, does Page 151 of Macca's say that?

It says...
"It appears the obverse 2005 dies were accidentally mixed with the 2006 MOR reverses. When the error was discovered it was decided to continue with the mismatched striking to avoid publicity that would be generated from a low issue mule issue."
There was a big argument on one of the other forums as to whether the 2005 MOR is a mule or not. Downies advertised them as mules at one stage. Whatever they are they are not rare at nearly 6 mil minted.

I suppose if sellers advertised them as Australia's most common mule, I could almost live with that. I just think that once they made the decision to continue minting them with the mismatch, this then becomes an intended die pairing, losing it's mule tag.

Learjet, Just to clarify. There was a huge debate that was never finalised one way or another in relation to whether the 2005 Proof MoR was a mule. It was only ever available in a 2006 proof set. There are about 40 of them.
IMHO the 2005 proof MoR was a mule. But I'm biased given that I own one.

I also sent a message to the seller, and basically got the same response as Zaggy. The seller apparently holds the opinion that Maccas is as good as a Bible, and if Macca says 'mule', end of conversation.
No one is bidding on them anyway. One earlier sale did not attract any bids either, so I'd say most people are wise up.
Whenever I come across sellers that are trying to rip uneducated (coinwise) collectors off, I just add their name to my personal blacklist & make sure I never buy anything from them. My silent form of protest.
life is a mystery to be lived not a problem to be solved

Hi Yas, I thought a similar debate was also over the circulated 2005 MOR, but I sometimes get confuzzled. In any case I'm fairly sure ;-) the ones Downies were promoting as mules were the 2005 circulated type.

Yeah I can live with 'MULE' on the coins that are in the 2006 Mint set... OBVIOUSLY the obverse is supposed to say 2006... But at what point does an issued become 'common'? I got 3x 2005 MULES in change yesterday!
As Macca's says "It appears the obverse 2005 dies were accidentally mixed with the 2006 MOR reverses. When the error was discovered it was decided to continue with the mismatched striking to avoid publicity that would be generated from a low issue mule issue."; now this shows our friend has taken the usage of the term MULE out of all context. The key phrase is "it was decided to continue with the mismatched striking to avoid publicity that would be generated from a low issue mule issue". The mint didnt want to issue a 'MULE' so it continued minting as an 'official' release. Thus the 2005MoR is NOT a Mule!
The 2005MoR in a 2006 Proof Set tho, IS a MULE...

Small clarification, not in mint sets, a small number of 2005 MOR $1 and 2005 platypus 20c were produced in Proof sets. If that's a mule, then I've got a couple of pearlers.... It's a 2005 MOR $1......... Mule
