I'm looking for an introductory guide--a book, online article, ebook--that offers recommendations for a beginner regarding type of camera, lighting, surface, holder (or how to keep camera steady), angles, and such.

I would not want it to be too technical because I am not a photographer, so if it starts using a lot of photography jargon without clear explanations, I'll get lost quickly!

I have tried taking photos with my iPhone 6s, with a couple of different magnification apps, but I have yet to take a picture of a coin that looks good.

Thanks!

Mark

There's always the book by Mark Goodman -- "Numismatic Photography". You could also start by browsing selected threads in this subforum.

Thank you!

Oh yes, I am definitely reading the forum, but I know next to nothing, so it's hard to understand a lot of the posts without some basic knowledge.

Overall though I am finding this forum to be by far the best I have seen. So good in fact, that I stopped reviewing coin forums. When you find something really good, why keep looking?

For anyone hoping improve their coin photography rapidly without investing too much in equipment at first, I strongly believe lighting is the best place to start. Read and experiment until you understand the effects that certain lighting techniques offer. I personally believe that no matter how special (or unspecial) your equipment is, the real artistry with coin photography lies in what you can do with some light.

Mark Goodman also has a bunch of articles published on his coin photography website. I especially find the Coin Photography Lighting Shootout article to be highly enlightening, and still helpful if you aren't keen on the technical articles.

Also, Welcome to the Community!
Rest in Peace

Your iPhone6s is capable of taking excellent coin photos. Have you read this yet?https://goccf.com/t/160092&SearchTe...iphonography As for recommendations for a coin photography set up I suggest this set up by rmpsrmps as an option.https://goccf.com/t/87392&SearchTerms=set+up I went with this and love it.

dd27 mark goodman book is a good read. but it will not teach you how to photography coins. it will give you an appreciation for lighting and the effect it has on the camera. I started out as you are. I can tell you if you want to get at it quick. go to the thread "elcheapo". the gentleman that keeps that thread up. he can help you and save you a lot of time and money. you will find on his thread a link. he helps us all. plus other members here as well will help you including myself. he can put you a kit together and calibrate it. the rest is just a learning curve. welcome to the forum. hope to see some of your work as you progress.

Thank you so much rocky!

I checked out his website [ http://www.macrocoins.com/ ], and I'm impressed! I submitted a request for a system.

I really appreciate the suggestion.

All the best,

Mark

I kept my iPhone 4s and made a stand for it. Put a macro lens on it and it takes pretty good coin photos. I have much better equipment now but I keep the iPhone for just in case...

I have not heard back from Ray of MacroCoins and I do not have a direct email address or phone number (I used the website contact form). I cannot message him here b/c I don't have enough posts.

Would one of you ask him to contact me?

Thanks!

Thanks Rocky!

I know I can get really busy and it seems that I haven't responded to someone for a couple of days, but then I discover, omg they contacted me 9 days ago and I have yet to respond!

So I shall wait a couple of weeks and trust all will be well. :O)

Hi Mark...I got your contact from my website and responded, and also sent email from CCF, but have not heard back from you. Maybe check your spam folder to see if my emails are going there?
