I have seen some of these posted on this site but had to dig mine out before I read up on these. Any info would be greatly appreciated. My buddy had this in his possession from when his father passed. He knows I dabble with coins and gave it to me. Please fill me in on these shell type coins.

Lesson 1: It's a CENT, not a penny. On the other hand the "muggles" call it a penny in the US. That's a hang over from when we were a British colony.

You could put a dime in the opened space where the obverse was. Then you could use it for a magic trick to change a cent into a dime. (just flip it over inside your covered hand)

Or, possibly, a melting Zincoln.

Is this what we would call a half-penny? (If we were still British?)

Half pennies look like this: It couldn't be a melting zincoln. It is too precise to be that. It was altered on a lathe in a machine shop.

Coop is right - these were commonly found in magic stores when I was a kid (yes, there were magic stores once!). You would show the cent, cup it upside down in one palm in your joined hands, and the dime would fall into the other palm to hold up. Still a good trick!
