I've noticed that coin guides such PCGS list higher valuations for P1 than many of the next grades up. This certainly is counter-intuitive. Perhaps I'm not reading tables correctly. Thx in advance.

P1s are sought after for the lowball registry sets.

The answer is that some of us are nuts. The challenge is to identify. In this first example, weights and dimensions helped identify it as a Mexican 1/4 Real 1858-1862. This next one was a little tougher. Yes, a 1921-S Morgan dollar, but which VAM? Of over 170 choices, It prove to be VAM-29. Now it gets harder. I've been scratching my head over this one for a long time, but no success. My only clue is that I found it in the road.

It's my spoof coin. It was also featured in a cleaning/conservation piece. How to remove road tar while preserving patina.

Quote: People take pride in having the worst? Yes, it can be VERY challenging to find very low grade coins that have not been damaged from circulation or cleaned, that can get into a problem free holder. Usually by the time a coin gets down to a Pr-1 or Fr-2 they have picked up scratches, gouges, rim bumps etc and can't get into a non-details slab.

I thought that the definition of a lowball coin is that the coin still can be fully identified (so: country, face value, year and mint where applicable) despite being heavily worn but not damaged. Am I missing something here?
