I know this is risky, but, I am looking for some opinions. I have: 2 silver dollars - 1923 and 1882. 465 Halves - 1917 - 1964; 700 Quarters - 1934 - 1964 - a few outliers like 1 - 1902; 800 Dimes - 177 Mercury and 623 Roosevelt; 120 Nickels - Jefferson from 1964 and down. I called a couple of NGC dealers and I am not getting any "warm fuzzies." These are not graded and only halves and quarters are inventoried - so far. What is the best way to go about finding a home for these other than a melting pot?

Keep up with this forum for a few months with plenty of posts and you can sell here.
Either that or join a coin club. I am sure that there would be many members glad to pay silver melt value, but would not of course melt them.

Unless you have some key dates that you can tell them about, the only offers you will get for these sight unseen is melt value.

i would think that you should be able to get between $6,500 and $7,000 for that lot. Are you getting offers much lower than that?

Unless they are higher grades or key dates expect get offers in the 10-12 times face value range for the ninety percent silver coins. Just to be clear the 120 Nickels - Jefferson from 1964 and down only contain 35% silver if they are 1942-1945 with a large mint mark above Monticello on the reverse, all others contain zero silver

Again - have you searched these for scarce dates?

Thanks for the replies.
The guys I talked to really were not interested in any details and basically said, "Because silver is so high right now, face x 14 is where we are."
I have an excel spreadsheet with each year, and mint by coin and my neophyte stab at Poor, Fair, Good or Fine. This is done so far for halves and quarters. I would be happy to share. I am also going to take a few pictures of some and upload them in a little while.
The offer for melt was $7000. I think, and perhaps wrong, there are some good, if not great collectibles. We shall see...

Steele and Coinfrog - sorry, I missed seeing your posts before submitting my reply. I guess I need to do more homework. I used CoinTrackers.com as a "go by" and felt, collector value for even a 'fair' coin was slightly higher than melt. Where might the best place be to reference 'scarce' dates...or am I there and have overlooked it?
Again, All, Thanks for the help and guidance.

Hey, CP, welcome to CCF. You sound like you want to get out of your position in coins. How do you feel about pork bellies?

You may want to look up your coins on Numismedia or the PCGS web site.

First of all: WELCOME. Second: It's never hurt to ask. You are at a right place to ask/search for help. Now, to your question: IF you have the time and patient then here are the steps on what you should do: 1) Sort/organize your coins into denomination/date/mint mark AND Grade (once you learn about grading, see below). For you to 'determine' the coin's value (beyond silver melt), you need to know the condition/grade of the coin... so, go here to quickly learn about grading (enough to get an approximate grade): http://www.PCGS.com/photograde/2) Go here to get a rough estimate of the 'market price' for your coin in it's grade: http://www.numismedia.com/fmv/fmv.shtmlThis market price is like retail price, which you will NOT get when selling to dealers. Expect to get no more than 50%-70% of the 'market price' when you sell such large quantities of coins. SO, unless certain coins are in exceptional condition (uncirculated) or key/semi-key date/mint mark coin, they will go into the 'MELT' pile. 3) Selling them: a) Sell your 'MELT' pile at around melt (usually dealers pay 5% - 15% below melt). b) Sell all your higher value coins to: Coin Dealers (least money, easiest), ebay (more money, time, effort, headache), NOTE: IF you spend enough time talking and researching on this forum, then you will meet the minimum number of posts. Once you meet the selling criteria, then you can sell your coins on here (probably for the most money and the least headache). Go here to read on the requirements to BUY/SELL on this forum: http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...asp?CAT_ID=8I hope my answer is details enough to help you out.

Thank you, SA4H for the information.
The dealers are currently offering 14 x face and frankly, what little I have learned so far, I can see that a large portion of what I have may end up there, and I am okay with that.
Anyway, I have a good start on the sorting by denomination/date/mint mark and have a spreadsheet set up for that. Now, to learn a bit about grading...and condition.
As a point of reference and to help - if you don't mind - the Liberty on the top row left above appears to grade close to the PCGS photograde image MS60. What am I missing in this assessment? If anyone reading this post cares to opine, I'll not be offended.
Thank you, one and all!
