Apparently the quarter die needed cleaning, and the mint personnel were not too careful as someone removed the reins from in front of the hand, and also cleaned away parts of the saddle. Normally the reins pass under the hair on the horses neck, and emerge on the other side to join the hand at the bottom. also the cleaning affected the saddle at the pommel, and the rear of the saddle. I have several of these coins. I'm not sure what they were removing, as there is no evidence of any clash marks. I did not provide other pictures, as the coins show nothing else out of the ordinary.

Yep over polished die. (probably from grinding away clashmarks) Second picture almost looks like a large portion of the saddle in front of his leg is missing.

It might be a Struck Through Grease though. Note the devices on the motto seem to be the same sizes on both coins. It is were over polished, it would seem that those devices would also be affected?

Thanks for posting the side by sides. It helps a lot better than just a description.

Yes, as I said, the pommel (forepart of the saddle) was polished away, as well as the saddle rear, and the reins to the hand. It couldn't be grease because I have several BU specimens all exactly the same. I think also that the mint personnel can be pretty deft with their instruments (when they are careful), and can hit many small areas without affecting other parts of the die. I appreciate your thoughts, though. Do you think they're worth keeping?

Very interesting observation. Nice eye on that one, yontan. I can only appreciate your attention to detail, not give an expert's comment on any added value. I suspect minimal if any, and I could very well be wrong, but nonetheless, very cool. Also a great lesson die polishing!
