I was quite surprised to see NGC's grade on this one and doubly surprised to see a CAC on it. It is attributed to a specific collection so perhaps the graders were a bit influenced by the submitter. Anyone care to venture a guess at the grade. Reverse is OK for the grade but obverse seems a grade or two worse to me.

I'd guess AU-53, possibly from the Jules Reiver collection. Luster seems lacking but I have a similar Reiver piece that received a 53. That collection was awarded some pretty optimistic NGC grades IMO.

Your coin was struck from a very worn obverse die which probably accounts for some of the obverse weakness.

It's not the Reiver collection but probably a similar deal with regards to grading. And I thought about a worn die - the obverse strike does look weak but it also looks like some quite extensive wear.
Rest in Peace

The coin is showing a lot of luster, so it will grade AU. I like the coin at AU53. My guess is that NGC graded it higher.

One question: I see this look a lot in bust halves where there is a dark toning around the edges and a bright, almost white center. What causes that look?

Easy 53 and might even make AU-55.

Sorry I forgot about this thread. It's an AU55. I had thought the wear was considerable but I guess it was just a poor strike.
