Roman? Coin Or Medal? - Coin Community Forum

Smallcentguy Pillar of the Community Canada 1984 Posts	Posted 07/31/2016 09:39 am This one has me totally stumped and there aren't any legends to give me hints. The obverse side has a bust that looks kind of Roman. Perhaps though it is a crude version of an early King George. The reverse appears to have a little harlequin type of fellow. he is holding a wand in his hand. Any thoughts on this one at all? Many thanks. Report this Post to the Staff

RogerRamjet Valued Member United States 172 Posts	Posted 08/01/2016 12:35 am Bob L is correct; the winged staff with two snakes wrapped around it is a caduceus, which strongly suggests that the reverse depicts the Greek god Hermes (aka the Roman god Mercury). I agree that it's not a coin but, because it appears to be hammered and well worn, I wouldn't describe it as modern. I don't think it's ancient either. I'd guess that it's one to two hundred years old rather than one to two thousand. There are many reasons why somebody might make a medallion with a Greek/Roman god on it, including just for the heck of it. Report this Post to the Staff

I found another in an ebay listing here calling it a "1/2 Daler Token" but I haven't found anything else to confirm this yet- http://www.ebay.ca/itm/371692559550?rmvSB=true 1718, Sweden.
