Hi, While I was coin roll hunting pennies today. I found a couple of colorful rainbow toning pennies. I was wondering if this is natural toning. Any info would be great! Thanks

Hi, Hightek, and Toning with blues and purples in it like that always makes me suspicious of heat or chemical treatment. To my eye, those don't look natural, but I'll let the experts chime in.

Probably not; looks like careful heat treatment to me.
Do this exercise for yourself: Heat a number of individual pennies to different levels of heating, and drop some of tehm into water to cool quickly, and some just let cool naturally. With some compromise, you will eventually get some nicely rainbow toned coins.
THAT is why I do not add any extra value to beautifully rainbow toned coins.
Another exercise: Heat a dime to red hot and drop into water; it will be black. Try using THAT at the supermarket checkout!

Agree definitely not natural, however it may have been accomplished.

There is no such thing as "artificial" or "natural" toning. All toning is either "market acceptable" or "not market acceptable".

So is this market acceptable or not market acceptable?

BadThad I understand what your saying. The terms natural toning (NT) and artificial toning (AT) seem to be acceptable terms. If I had to choose how to describe the difference I would go with Normal toning - coins that have toned under normal collecting condition Abnormal toning - coins that have toned under other than normal condition That is my version of AT and NT What ever we call it, the coins the OP posted are not the type of toning most desire.

If you were a TPG, would you grade and slab them?

with this criteria all the Morgans that sat in the treasury vaults and acquired toning while in the vault would be AT because that is not a normal collecting condition.

They look like they've been laundered and ran through the dryer while still being in a jeans pocket.
