A client of mine knows I'm interested in coins and brought this to me saying she got it at an auction. She wouldn't say what she spent, hopefully not too much. My very amateurish grading puts it at a VG?
Thanks..

Dragon Slayer's grade differently than most tokens. They were very well made, and mostly very well struck, an MS example will appear proof like.
VG8 is in line.
1857s in high grades are readily available for relatively cheap (compared to say the 1850 one penny). If she paid more than $5 for this then she paid too much.

Snagged a good one, howbeit a lower grade (VG 10).

This is Doctor Courteau variety 286 having a rariety factor of 9
(on a scale of 1-10, with 1 being common).

The tell-tale diagnostic is the four leaves emerging from the fruit
cluster of the right Cornucopia (to the left of and above the right
Rosette). Absent this obvious diagnostic, the grade is to low to
attribute otherwise. All other varieties shew at most two grass blades
(of varying size and placements).

Only varieties 286 (R-9)and 287 (R-5)share this diagnostic. The obverse
of 286 is "Curved line below r. arm, a short line above. Small knob on
dagger-hilt. Fig 7 points to center of tooth. Perf. and brok. dies,
especially thro. letter R.'

doug
