Hey guys

So I just got this back in my change earlier today and I noticed that something was going on with the mint mark ..
After looking it over and taking a few photos it looks like their might also be some doubling of the letters in Liberty ?
This may be nothing at all but I wanted you guys to take a look !

Zinc rot on the mintmark, Die Deterioration on Liberty. Also some orange peel, nothing that warrants a premium

Sorry, it was not struck this way, it looks like a plating blister that was popped by some zinc rot.

The poor plating on the 1980's cents has fooled a lot of people over the years. If it were a RPM, the second mint mark wouldn't be so much smaller than the original. What happens is a gas bubble or small crack will be in the plating, and over time, it will raise up off of the surface as the Zinc begins to corrode. Many times you can push those raised areas down with a tooth pick.

This is what I'm talking about , the coin does have crud in that area but it's not to the point that it's corroded into the coin making the area I'm talking about look raised ...
Whatever it is , it's raised off the surface just as the mint Mark is ..

This page explains some of the different types of doubling that can appear on a coin that aren't doubled dies: http://www.lincolncentsonline.com/m...oubling.html
Pay close attention to the split plate doubling and how that looks on a mint mark.
