Bought this for $30 a while ago from a coin store. Just wanted to know what you think. I've looked it up and apparently this is worth a few thousand, but I don't know if that is true.

Since this is not from one of the big 3 graders (PCGS, NGC, ANACS) there is a good chance it is over-graded, with the intent of trying to squeeze out more money from a buyer. There were not a whole lot of coins from the 70's that got up to PR69/70, like what we frequently find from today's coins. I think it is probably only about PR65-67 which is more realistically valued at $10-$25.

I would say around $20 would be as much as this coin would bring today.

Where did you look it up, to find it " worth a few thousand?" There were 4,000,000 proofs issued, and at best if it were in a PCGS holder it might be worth $15 to $20. I think you overpaid for it.

These come very nice in the set and most will look virtually flawless.

Only "true" PR-70's have a lot of value and to realize this value they need to be in the right holder.

It looks like a nice coin but you can't tell with this date in a photo.

If you bought two '76 3 pc PR sets for $30 there's a good chance one of the coins in the set are nicer than this one. But $30 is still a great price for a PR-70.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

Aron, The PCGS app says $2500-3500 in PF70 and the RedBook shows auctions in that range. Go down to PF69 and you can get them for as little as $20.

Unfortunately that coin almost certainly isn't PF70. A coin with a 70 grade (be it MS or PF) is an absolutely flawless coin. Your coin appears to have a mark on Kennedy's cheek, spotting on the reverse and possibly a scratch on the reverse too. As other people have pointed out it looks like your coin was graded and slabbed by someone other than one of big well respected grading companies. So if you go to sell it the coin will be treated as though there was no grade on it at all (meaning the buyer will decide the grade).

Let's wait to see it in a major TPG slab and then we can discuss. It will never get 70 dough in this holder.

If this coin was truly worth a "few thousand dollars", the coin store you bought if from would NOT have sold it to you for $30... They would have asked a "few thousand dollars" for it...

If this coin sold for $30, I think we understand why the self-slabbers are making a lot of money.

Look up a 1976 silver proof set on ebay, and you're likely to get a half dollar at least as good. And two other silver coins.

It is a nice-looking coin regardless. Some of the damage that Saruma sees (and I do too) could be on the holder and not the coin, but I suspect the spotting on the reverse is on the coin.

I see this as a good learning experience.

One ... Know what your buying
Two .... Buy the coin .. Not the holder.

---------------------
There were some graders that were grading all their coins MS 70.
But the coins were not MS 70 grade.

----------------------
As others have posted, you can buy the a original proof set for
much less.
